Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) enables the trenchless installation of pipelines, cables, and other underground utilities beneath roads, rivers, railways, environmentally sensitive areas, and other obstacles where conventional excavation may be impractical or disruptive. Using specialised drilling rigs, guidance systems, drilling fluids, and downhole tooling, HDD can be adapted to a wide range of soil and rock conditions.

The process typically involves drilling a precisely controlled pilot hole along a planned bore path, enlarging the bore through one or more reaming stages, and finally installing the pipeline or cable through the completed underground crossing.

The HDD Process

Using drilling rigs with a wide range of pull and push force capacity, pilot bore drilling is conducted in all soil and rock classes. The eco-friendly bentonite drilling fluid supports the removal of drill cuttings and provides stabilising lubrication. Our drilling teams manage the fluid treatment with specialist expertise.
